Størrelse: Hanner indtil 24 cm og 1075 g, hunner indtil 12 cm. Udbredelse: Sydlige og østlige Afrika (Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mocambique, Namibia, Sydafrikanske Republik, Swaziland (uddød), Zambia, Zimbabwe). Formodes også at forkomme i sydøstlige DRC (tidl. Zaire). Levested: Tør savanne. Tolererer ændringer af levestederne, men ikke decideret urbanisering. Aktivitet og adfærd: Tilbringer størstedelen af året nedgravet i jorden, hvor den indhylder sig i en slags puppe. Når regntiden begynder, kommer den op af jorden igen for at yngle i midlertidige vandhuller og grøfter. I yngletiden er den dagaktiv. Status: Rødlistekategori: Least Concern (LC). Selv om arten mister territorium på grund af urbanisering og selv om den spises i dele af udbredelsesområdet, regnes den generelt ikke som truet da den har en stor udbredelse, er alsidig i sit valg af levesteder, og da den samlede bestand formodes at være stor. I Sydafrika, hvor den tilsyneladende er i tilbagegang, især i provinsen Gauteng, er den dog anbragt i rødlistekategori Near Threatened. Betragtes som uddød i Swaziland. Tilsyneladende ualmindelig i den nordlige del af udbredelsesområdet, hvor der fra lande som Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania og Kenya kun findes få rapporteringer.
